Book synopsis/description:

The famed 19th century criminal lawyer A. Koni told Lev Tolstoy about one of his cases. It concerned a robbery, and one of the jurymen, a young aristocrat, recognised in the woman in the dock, the girl whom he had once seduced and then abandoned. Struck by the enormity of his guilt, he decided to redeem himself by marrying her and thus ease her lot as well. This story set the scene for Resurrection (1889-1899), one of Tolstoy's greatest novels.
This is the story of Katya Maslova, her fall and spiritual resurrection, shown against the background of scenes of Russian life, its nobility, aristocratic salons, its muzhiks, courtrooms, prisons, convict.gangs, all of old Russia , a land of suffering and insurrection.
In identifying the character of Prince Nekhlyudov with Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky wrote: "For 60 years Prince Nekhlyudov has been abroad in Russia.... For 60 years the stern voi ce of justice has condemned one and all; his (Tolstoy's) boo ks are a documentary presentation of the searching of a strong-willed individual of the 19th century to find his place in the history of Russia."
The tsarist censors cut the novel savagely, leaving but 25 of the 129 original chapters unaltered.
The complete and unabridged text of Resurrection first appeared in Soviet times in the 1933 edition of The Complete Works of L. N. Tolstoy.
